From Decades of Floral to Fresh and Fab: Bathroom Makeover

When we bought this 1951 ranch the bathrooms were beyond outdated. I loved the bones, the original hardware and cabinets, but the rest was YUCK!

There where THREE layers of different floral wallpapers when we stripped this room down. It was better for us to start with new sheetrock than try to repair the years of wear and tear.

Removing the dated tile that was broken and chipped really helped to update the space. It seems like a tough task, but makes the biggest remodeling impact in older bathrooms. If you are debating tackling the tile, go for it! You won't regret it!

I kept the original square tub and half moon sink...they were so fun and really added personality to the bathroom. I went with a matte grey tile in a herringbone pattern in the shower. It was a commercial type tile that I adore. That is one recommendation I have - go outside the norm if you want a touch of flair in your home. You don't have to just use what is popular in home decor, look to public places for inspiration. A similar tile was in our local yogurt shop and inspired this bathroom!

We kept the unique slanted built ins and the vanity mirror that folds up and down. Everything just got a fresh coat of paint and update.

Older homes have character you can't buy or install, they are just different. I feel like this bathroom turned out to be a great mix of old and new, functionality and tradition. My boys love it and so do I.
