Take Your Old Card Table From Trash to Game Table Treasure

This card table makeover project may seriously be one of my favorite "trash to treasure" transformations to date and that my friends is saying a lot!

Let me show you how to make this awesome game table..

My card table was seriously minutes from the trash pile. It had so many layers of plaster and paint on it from years of being used as a prep table on my job sites and then, to top it off, I cut through the vinyl top with a circle cutter. (don't ask) The top of the table was just 1/8 masonite so once the vinyl cover ws damaged, it didn't stand much of a chance against water, wallpaper paste, plaster or wet paint.

I decided to go ahead and remove the top and see what I had to work with. I used my Ryobi drill with a socket attachment to remove the screws holding the top to the frame. It was no surprise that the top was fused on to the frame so I had to use a little muscle to remove it.
It didn't take long to see there was no saving the top but...the frame...well I think I may have an idea!!! Let's make a game table.

There was a small amount of rust on the frame but nothing that couldn't be fixed.

I decided to make my top out of 1/2 inch PureBond Birch Plywood. Using my Ryobi tools I cut the table top to size. Then I stained the board.

Now it's time to make the game board.

Using frog tape I taped off my board pattern.

Then I stained on the pattern.

When I finished I removed the tape to reveal the board. I am so happy with the look. I used 3 different colors of stain to achieve this look.

I attached the top back on to the refinished base. I used cabinet knobs for my checker pieces. .
I love the way this makeover turned out! When people come to visit it's dual purpose is a perfect way to add space and keep my guests entertained!
